Blog Post Of The Week: What’s the point of the Oscars?

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , , on February 24, 2011 by Ross McG

To round off our Oscar week here on Ross v Ross, let’s ask if we really should have them at all (Uh… we probably should have them – otherwise what the heck would we have filled our blog with these past few days?). Who better to answer that question than the great Fandango over at Fandango Groovers. One of the first movie blogs we started reading once we got our little shindig off the ground, it still always manages to catch our attention, no mean feat when you get distracted by pretty colours as much as we do. It’s also just celebrated its second birthday. So go over there, wish him a happy birthday and read his great post on the Oscars’ current standing. You can read it by clicking HERE or the image above. Happy birthday, Fands. Enjoy the Terrible Twos… Continue reading

Blog Post Of The Week: And the Oscar winners should be…

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , , , , on February 18, 2011 by Ross McG

We’re going to cheat a little on today’s Blog Post Of The Week and give you a double helping, even if both posts come from the same blog. And what a blog it is. We Rosses thought we were the coolest movie-blogging duo in town until we happened across the CyniCritics, where the writings of Matt and Luke (presumably Mark and John spread their own movie gospel elsewhere) are a regular treat for us. Like a lot of us out there, the boys have caught Oscar fever this week and have each compiled a rundown of who will win what, but more importanly, who should win what. The great thing about both their lists is that I find myself agreeing and disagreeing with them in equal measure. Get over there and give your own opinion. To read Matt’s list click HERE and to read Luke’s list click HERE. Let the guys know what you think. Continue reading

Blog Post Of The Week: Wicked Game

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , on February 11, 2011 by Ross McG

Okay folks, it’s BPOTW time again, and today we’re featuring a really fun post from our buddy the Mad Hatter over at The Dark Of The Matinee. Along with fellow blogger Jess from Insight Into Entertainment, he has put out a rather clever little game of Guess The Combined Movie Title. We will let him explain… Suffice to say it will have you giving your cinema brain a good going over. Click HERE or the image above to read the post and guess as many of the clues as you can. Don’t scroll down to his comments section if you don’t want to spoil the answers! Continue reading

Blog Post Of The Week: Diary of a Best Picture winner

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , , on February 4, 2011 by Ross McG

When we started Blog Post Of The Week recently we were initially keen to feature something from a different movie blogger each week. But that premise just got blown out of the water by our pal Univarn over at A Life In Equinox. Last month we picked his piece on how IMDb’s ‘Known For’ new section doesn’t really, er, work. But this week we couldn’t ignore his quite brilliant post, Diary Of A Best Picture Winner. On his Twitter account, Univarn said this was ‘the first post in a while I’ve written and it came out just how I wanted it to’. At first glance that might appear an arrogant comment, but it’s not. We know exactly what he means. That feeling of just writing something that you’ve just nailed. Well, Univarn, you nailed it buddy. Click HERE or the picture above to read his post. Continue reading

Blog Post Of The Week: X-Men: First Class And Superhero Nostalgia

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , , on January 27, 2011 by Ross McG

This week’s post of the week comes from Darren over at The Movie Blog. If ever a website deserved its title, this is it. He’s been on our blogroll since we started and for good reason. While at RvR we often deal in a pithiness that can very quickly get tiresome, Daz dissects films in intrinsic detail, always remembering to entertain the reader as he goes along. For instance, I have little to no interest in comic books, but I love reading what he writes about them, in the same way I suppose that I know nothing about cars but like watching Top Gear. Okay, I think I’ve bigged him up enough. His post that we’re featuring this week is about the new X-Men movie. Instead of drooling over the new pictures released, Darren delves into how the film’s historical setting will impact on audiences. It’s a great post. Read it by clicking HERE or the picture above. Blog Post Of The Week: Three Breathtaking Movie Locations To Visit In 2011

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , , , , on January 21, 2011 by Ross McG

I have a real love/hate relationship going with Castor over at the movie blog Anomalous Material. I love him because his website is just all kinds of awesomeness and is one of the first I click on every day… and I hate him because his website is so awesome. Not the kind of hatred that keeps me up at night, but pretty damn close. This I’m sure is the first of many occasions when Castor’s stuff will feature in our blog post of the week and this one is a doozy. Click HERE or the pic above to read his envy-inspiringly detailed look at where Amélie, Sherlock Holmes and Batman Begins were shot. Good job, Castor. I still kind of hate you though. Blog Post Of The Week: Alice In Wonderland review

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , , , on January 13, 2011 by Ross McG

What a week it’s been for cinema. Well, if you’re a James Bond fan. As the great Fandango over at the equally great Fandango Groovers blog knows, I am not the biggest of Bond fans (although I will admit that GoldenEye is perhaps the greatest film ever made). But it’s not 007 that’s made our already prestigious Blog Post Of The Week slot – it’s something else that tends to grind my gears: Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland. This is a film I thought was an absolute unoriginal mess – here’s my review – so when our old pal Katie at The Stories That Really Mattered, who is a bigger Burton fan than Helena Bonham Carter, took a look at it this week it peaked my interest. Although she is wrong (hehe), Katie makes some good arguments for the film, and as usual her enthusiasm always shines through. Check out the post HERE or click on the pic above. Hope you all had a good week. Blog Post Of The Week will return in… Blog Post Of The Week next week. Yes, that was a terrible Bond gag. Continue reading

Blog Post Of The Week: IMDb’s ‘Known For’ Doesn’t Know Everything

Posted in BLOG POST OF THE WEEK with tags , , on January 6, 2011 by Ross McG

New year. New series on RvR. From our rummaging through the movie blogs on a given week, we’re going to flag up one great piece of writing you may have missed. To kick us off, here’s a terrific examination of the funny flaw behind a recent feature on IMDb, in which it lists the films a particular actor/director/whatever is associated with. It’s written by the always insightful Univarn at his blog A Life In Equinox, and we think it’s pretty brilliant. Click HERE or the picture above to read it. Continue reading
