With the World Cup only around the corner, we at RvR decided to set up a little match ourselves. Cinema’s two greatest teams of footballing prisoners kick off, but which one’s through on goal, and which one’s just plain offside? On one hand, you have Vinnie Jones, various regulars from Lock Stock and Snatch and a simply awesome soundtrack. Also, this was even produced by Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn so it had their style all over it even if they didn’t write or direct this.
On the other you have a young Stallone, Max Von Sydow, Michael Caine, and Pele…I’l repeat that Pele! It’s a war time prison break film featuring the worlds greatest sport and it’s a lot of fun.
Acting in both was equally thin (even with Caine) but I put my money on Mean Machine. It’s extremely quoteable, very funny and while both this and Victory have happy endings, Pele just can’t compare to Danny Mehan. “1 nil, to the Mean Machine, 1 nil to the Mean Machine”

Mean Machine for me guys, ETV is just so corny and rubbish and over sentimentally English! Not that Mean Machine’s a classic!

It’s a relief to know that I’m not the only soul in blogland to have more than an irritated half-interest in the World Cup. I did a post a while ago on footballers turned actors in honour of SA 2010 and escape to victory featured in it. Would like to see it, more as an excuse to see Pele kick a ball in anger than anything else.
