Top Five… movie adverts
Commercials are normally the drivel that stand between you and the film you have paid good money to see at the cinema. But sometimes they can light up the main feature itself. Here are five of the best fictional advertisements.
5. Magnolia
Frank TJ Mackey, the poster boy for chasing skirt, promises lonely losers an endless fountain of easy women in this commercial. Would you buy something from a man who describes himself as a ‘master of the muffin?’ If the answer is ‘yes’, you may want to take down his number…
4. Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Someone thought it would be a good idea to replace Michael Myers, one of the scariest creations in horror movie history, with an advert for kids’ masks. Still, the catchy jingle brings its own brand of terror.
3. Batman
Tim Burton’s 1989 film came with a mountain of merchandise, so it made sense to have an advert in the movie itself. Even if the commerical doesn’t really make any sense, for as The Joker points out, chances are you’ve bought these products already. The Joker… definitely the Coca-Cola of Gotham’s criminal underworld.
2. Scrooged
One of those Christmas comedies you can watch any time of the year, Scrooged has perhaps the quintessential Bill Murray performance and is also a super satire on the cesspool that television has slithered into to die. The show advertised here looks absolutely brilliant though. Eat this…
1. Punch-Drunk Love
Like the sexploits up at number 5 in the list, this clip did not actually appear in the movie that inspired it. Thank God for DVD extras then. Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s follow-up to Magnolia spawned another advert from another sleazeball. This time it’s Dean Trumbell (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who raises a big laugh. All he needs is a guitar, a lorry, a car and some mattresses to produce comedy gold. The fact that it’s based on a real commercial just makes it even funnier.

Haha love that Joker
Don’t forget the ultimate in movie advertising: Brawndo (it’s got electrolytes). From the movie Idiocracy, it has spawned a whole series of ads on YouTube, check em out. Here’s the first – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbxq0IDqD04

Scrooged is awesome! Some of the Robocop commercials are great too, maybe should’ve made a top 5 appearance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0Gpd0U9ECo
